Delhi Mangolpuri Factory Fire: Four Dead, Two Injured in Basement Blaze
Four people died and two were injured after a basement fire engulfed a shoe factory in Delhi's Mangolpuri Industrial Area. Six people were rescued as police summoned the factory owner and began investigating the cause.
The fire was reported at around 9.30 pm at a footwear manufacturing unit in Phase 1 of Mangolpuri Industrial Area. Firefighters and police personnel rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations. After battling the blaze for several hours, fire teams managed to bring it under control and rescue six people trapped inside the factory.
All six were taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri, where four were declared dead on arrival. The other two injured people are undergoing treatment.
Fire officer ADO Paras Kumar said the fire originated in the basement of the factory, where footwear was manufactured and stored. Firefighters managed to confine the blaze to the basement, preventing it from spreading further through the building.
"The Fire Service received a call around 9:31-9:32 pm regarding a fire inside a factory in Mangolpuri. Six individuals were rescued. All of them were transported to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. It is a footwear manufacturing unit where shoes are produced and stored on the premises. The fire initially broke out in the basement. We managed to contain it within the basement, preventing it from spreading further," Kumar told reporters.
Explaining the rescue operation, Kumar said heavy smoke had spread through the building. Firefighters recovered one person from the staircase on the third floor and rescued five others from the fourth floor. He added that the fire had been completely extinguished and the cooling-down process was underway.
DCP (Outer) Vikram Singh said the factory owner had been summoned in connection with the incident. Police are also questioning the contractor and workers to establish how many labourers were present inside the factory when the fire broke out.
"The cause of the fire is being investigated. The blaze originated in the basement, after which the fire and smoke spread upwards—there was a significant amount of smoke. The factory owner has been summoned, and we are also questioning the contractor and workers to determine the total number of labourers present," Singh told reporters.
The investigation is now focused on establishing the cause of the fire and determining the number of workers present at the factory when the incident occurred. Four deaths and two injuries have been confirmed following the rescue operation.
